Look, I get all of the hot takes about White Jazz Man educating Non-Jazz Woman in La La Land, but I have to assume a lot of people reblogged it haven’t seen the movie because it does NOT let him just have that and doesn’t let him off with being patronizing, ever. Most of the movie is people telling him upfront that he’s wrong and/or also doesn’t understand the point of jazz, and, well, no spoilers, but the end doesn’t do him a big favor, either.

I get that people are salty about it (even though it and Moonlight were in different categories pretty much all night last night) but I thought it was incredibly moving and effective. Trying really hard not to engage with people who feel differently but I really think some of you are being done a disservice by one branch of misguided backlash.

I hope you don’t mind me reblogging this, but I agree. I have no idea how anyone got the idea that this was a movie about Ryan Gosling “saving jazz” – the only person who made an impact with jazz-inspired music was John Legend’s character. His is the most rousing speech about jazz, he’s the successful one. And that’s not even really what the movie is about at all. 

Look, I want Moonlight to win as much as the next guy. That movie tore me apart in places I didn’t know I had. That doesn’t mean La La Land deserves nothing.
